How Do You Manufacture Silicone?
Silicone is a synthetic material that is made by combining silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen molecules through a process called polymerization. The manufacturing process involves several steps, including:
- 1.Extraction of Silicon: Silicon is extracted from silicon dioxide, which is found in sand, quartz, and other minerals. The silicon is then purified using a chemical process to remove impurities.
- 2.Preparation of Silicone Polymer: The purified silicon is reacted with methyl chloride or other organic compounds to produce silicone polymers.
- 3.Mixing and Catalyst Addition: The silicone polymer is mixed with a catalyst, such as platinum, to initiate the cross-linking process.
- 4.Polymerization: The mixture is heated, causing the silicone polymer chains to bond together and form a solid material.
- 5.Processing: The solid silicone material is then shaped and processed into various products using methods such as injection molding, extrusion, and compression molding.
Conversion Machines
Once mixed, the new silicone compound can be converted from a simple silicone compound into a fixed silicone rubber product. These machines can convert the compound into various forms such as sheets, rolls, strips, tubes, profiles and sections.
In silicone engineering, processing machines are divided into two types: calenders and extruders.
Calendering:
Calendering is Silicone Engineering’s speciality and we have been experts in this field for over 40 years. In its simplest form, it is the process of forming a silicone alloy into sheets and rolls using one or more calenders. A calender is a series of large rolls (bowls) that can be assembled together to pre-form products into sheets. After setting the desired width and thickness, the sheet is removed from the bowl onto a baking belt, which transports it to the oven for high temperature pre-baking. As the sheet moves along the curing line and enters the heat of the oven, a heat-activated chemical cross-linking process takes place, giving the sheet a solid shape, in this case a silicone sheet or roll.
The manufacturing process may vary depending on the intended use of the silicone product. For example, medical-grade silicone undergoes additional processing and testing to ensure it meets specific regulatory requirements for biocompatibility and safety.
