Which is better: injection moulding or 3D printing?

3D printing is additive manufacturing, which means that the initial material is built layer by layer. 3D printing creates three-dimensional objects from reading virtual computer designs and re-produces them into shape by using materials, filaments or powders.

Injection moulding makes use of a mould. First, the reverse side of an object is machined from a material (e.g. aluminium, tool steel) that can safely handle molten construction material (the material of the finished object). The molten construction material is then poured into the mould. Once the material has cooled in the mould, the part is ready for use.

Injection moulding is generally better suited to producing large quantities of the same part. Injection moulding is an efficient process for creating complex shapes with high accuracy and repeatability. Although the initial costs for moulds and set-up can be high, the production costs per unit can be very low. Injection moulding is commonly used in industries such as automotive, medical devices and consumer goods.

3D printers, on the other hand, are suited to small-scale production, rapid prototyping and customisation. They allow more freedom to design and manufacture parts with complex geometries that are difficult or impossible to produce using injection moulding. 3D printers can also be used to create functional prototypes that can be tested and refined before final production. However, the unit cost of 3D printing is typically higher than injection moulding and production speeds are slower.

Injection moulding is therefore generally more suitable for mass production of identical parts, while 3D printing is more suitable for low-volume production, rapid prototyping and customisation.
